Lewiston-based Dirigo Federal Credit Union is expanding customer service in Cumberland County with a new branch under construction on Payne Road in Scarborough, targeted to open for business this December.

The new branch is the first for the 70-year-old institution in decades. Dirigo has four branches — in Lewiston, Auburn, Mechanic Falls and South Paris — and serves customers from the midcoast and western Maine all the way down to York county.

“This expansion is a natural fit with our broader growth strategy for the southern Maine market,” Kevin C. Joler, executive vice president and CFO, told Mainebiz. “Over the past several years, we’ve seen a consistent rise in demand for our products and services throughout southern Maine and it reached a point where we felt compelled to seriously consider opening a fifth branch.”

The credit union plans to hire four to six employees for the Scarborough location.

Drive-up service will include two interactive teller machines, which he said allows customers to use the machine as a traditional ATM, or to have a virtual interactive experience with an employee via live video chat.

The Scarborough branch is both a renovation and an addition to an existing building formerly occupied by New England Hi-Fi. The credit union will occupy 4,000 square feet and will share the additional 4,300 square feet with two retail tenants.

Lewiston-based Hebert Construction is the project’s builder. Design will be handled by Element Group, out of Portsmouth, N.H, and Scarborough’s own Gawron Turgeon Dillon Architects.

The cost of the project is $4.2 million, according to Simon Hebert, who is overseeing construction.

“At this time, we have no immediate plans for expansion beyond this location. While Dirigo Federal Credit Union proudly serves 10 counties across Maine, we are deliberate in managing our pace of growth, focusing on communities where we can truly add value,” said Joler.

“Maine is fortunate to have a strong network of financial institutions, especially credit unions, and we’re committed to complementing that landscape thoughtfully.”

Dirigo Federal Credit Union ranks No. 9 among the largest Maine-based credit unions in the Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on assets of $429.2 million as of Sept. 30, 2024. At that time, the credit union had 27,278 members.
