Located in the historic Bates Mill Complex, the new Lewiston Police Department reflects a powerful blend of preservation, innovation, and public service. Originally built as part of the Bates Mill and later converted into TD Bank offices, the structure underwent a complete transformation into a modern, secure police headquarters—reimagined to meet Risk Category IV standards required for essential facilities.

This 55,000 square foot renovation includes open offices, interrogation rooms, private offices, locker rooms, a fitness center, garage, and specialized areas for the FBI, DEA, and CID. Hebert Construction oversaw the complex retrofit, reinforcing the structure with concrete, rebar, structural steel, and graded lumber to withstand seismic events and other natural disasters.

Maintaining the building’s historic character while updating it to meet stringent safety codes required extensive collaboration with Platz Associates, HB Flemming, LeMessurier, and other partners. Structural revisions, unexpected soil conditions, and dimensional inconsistencies from previous renovations posed constant challenges—but consistent teamwork, open communication, and a shared sense of purpose carried the project forward.

Completed in early 2025, the new Lewiston Police Department stands as a long-term investment in public safety, local resilience, and the ongoing revitalization of downtown Lewiston.
