Taking on a major renovation of Maine Medical Center Sanford’s Emergency Department, from two critical care units to a new behavioral health wing, took thirteen months of phased construction. The department stayed open the entire time, and Hebert’s crew worked around an ED that never stopped seeing patients. Hebert served as construction manager on the 7,465-square-foot project, which followed two exam rooms and a new CT suite that the team had already built for MMC.

The refresh touched eight exam rooms, two behavioral health rooms, the waiting room, four bathrooms, and the med room. A new digital coloring wall gives patients a more engaging place to wait, and two roll-down gates installed behind the headwalls make the behavioral health rooms psychiatrically safe. New Corian surfaces went in at registration and the three nurses’ stations. New Norament Grano flooring and new lighting replace systems that had aged well past the needs of a modern emergency department.

The Hebert team coordinated the phasing with subcontractors Door Control, Mancini Electric, DSI Doors, Kelly Brothers, and Seaside Painting, along with ED directors Peter Tura and Alie Elzey, to keep the department running twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, throughout construction. The relationship continued past handoff: Hebert and the MMC team are already at work on a fourth project together.
